Dennis Colligan Wins the 2017 CNY Open

Dennis Colligan mastered windy conditions to win the Golf Max/Golf Pride Central New York Open for the second time in his career May 15 at the Country Club of Ithaca.

Colligan (Cazenovia Golf Club) finished at even-par 72 in both the morning and afternoon rounds for a 144 total to reclaim the title he won in 2010 at LaFayette Hills Country Club. The Golf Max/Golf Pride CNY Open, which is open to amateurs, is the first major of the season for Central New York PGA players.

Colligan cashed $1,500 for the win from a total purse of $7,275.

“We have one of our best fields in this event and you’re playing against the best players in our section so this is nice to win,” said Colligan, who finished third last year.

Colligan finished one stroke ahead of Oswego Country Club’s Michelle Murphy (73-72—145) while Joe Norman (Elmira Country Club) and Mark Tucker (Cazenovia Country Club) finished tied for third at 146.

Colligan was 2-under-par through 27 holes to stay ahead of Murphy, who was 1-under after 27 holes, and Tucker, who was at even-par for 27. But neither Murphy nor Tucker were able to overtake Colligan on the back nine. Norman finished even on the back nine to pull into a tie for third.

Colligan, who had one birdie to go with three bogeys on his last nine holes, stayed out of trouble in the 36-hole event and didn’t record a double-bogey on the 6,650-yard layout from the blue tees.

“I drove the ball well today,” he said. “To get it in the fairway on a day like today was huge with the wind.”

Seven amateurs entered in the tournament. Le Moyne College senior John Clare posted the top amateur total at 4-over 148 and earned $450 in pro shop credit. Clare (Bellevue CC), who won the CNY Open in 2015, finished sixth overall. Defending champion Kevin VandenBerg finished tied for 28th at 17-over 161.

In other tournament highlights:

Mark Tucker topped the senior pro leader board with rounds of 75 and 71 for a 146 total.

Ryan McGinnis (CNY PGA Section) recorded the low round of the day with a 3-under 69 during the afternoon round.

Michael Deuel (En-Joie Golf Club) scored an eagle from 88-yards out on the par-5 12th hole using a wedge.
