Members of the Syracuse District Golf Association defeated players representing the Central New York PGA, 20-10, at the 35th annual Sovik Cup. The stroke play event was held Sept. 30 at Tuscarora Golf Club in Camillus.

 

The Sovik tournament pits the area’s best senior amateurs from the Syracuse District Golf Association against senior professionals from the Central New York PGA.

The Sovik Cup SDGA Amateur team members included Kevin VandenBerg, Tom Fletcher, Michael Naton, Walt McArdell, John Harrington, Jack Weinerth, Todd Dischinger, Randy Young, Tom Christian, Gregg Bilyeu, Stew McGough and Dave Smith.

Representing the CNY PGA this year were Eric Manning (Elm Tree GC), Alan Savage (Turning Stone), Mel Baum (Hill N Dale), Rob Phelps (Vesper Hills), Tony Saraceno (Genegantslet GC), Joe Tesori (Pompey Club), Bruce Martins (Elm Tree GC), Stan Gorman (Pompey Club), Robert Todd (Turning Stone), Bob Fuller (Life Member), Scott Webster (Tuscarora) and Stan Lisk (Life Member).

 

The Sovik Cup is in honor of Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Famer Larry Sovik, who won six Syracuse District Amateur Championships in his career.

 

The CNY PGA leads the series 20-13-2.

 

There were changes to this year’s events. Each team had 12 players (originally there were 10 players on a team). Eight players ages 55-64 and four players 65 and older comprised the teams. Players 65 and over played from one tee forward than the 55-64 age group. The 55-64 players played against each other while the 65 and older players competed against each other.
