Brad Monroe prevailed over Seth Conway to win the 66th annual Apogee Investment Management Championship at Corning Country Club on June 12.
Monroe finished at 6-over 76 on the day and 1-over 285 overall for the tournament to edge Conway by one stroke. Conway carded a 2-over 72 and finished at 2-over 286 for second place.
With the victory, Monroe has now won two of Syracuse’s golf majors in his career: the AIM and the Syracuse District Golf Amateur. Monroe, who finished third in the 2021 AIM, won SDGA Player of the Year honors last season.
The outcome of the tournament hung in the balance on the back nine. Monroe led by five shots heading into the final round but saw that lead slowly evaporate thanks to two bogeys and three double bogeys on the back.
Conway, a rising sophomore on the George Mason men’s golf team, took a one-stroke lead with par on the par-3 No. 15 after Monroe recorded a double bogey.
The par-4 17th hole proved to be the deciding factor for Monroe and Conway. Monroe regained the lead with a birdie while Conway settled for bogey. Monroe’s one shot lead held up as both players made par on 18.
Jackson Saroney, 15, finished third 5-over 289 followed by Jack Angelucci (6-over 290) and five-time champ Luke Hobika (7-over 291).
