With a 4-under-par 68, Matt Campbell (Teugega Country Club) finished atop the individual pro leaderboard at the Turning Stone Resort Casino Pro-Am Team Scratch Tournament on July 15 at En-Joie Golf Club in Endicott.

“It was my first time playing the course and it was awesome,” said Campbell, a PGA of America Golf Associate at Teugega. “The conditions were amazing. The greens were very true and I had a wonderful day playing alongside some members from my club. It’s always nice to come out on top especially with a big field filled with a lot of talented players.”

The 35-year-old Campbell finished two strokes ahead of Ryan McGinnis (Turning Stone Resort Casino) and Eric Manning (Elm Tree GC).

LEADERBOARD

Campbell carded four birdies on the front nine including three straight on holes 7, 8 and 9. He finished with six birdies against one double bogey on the day.

“That front nine was a good one,” Campbell said. “I had a few missed chances on the first five holes where I feel like I should have made a few more birdies. But I didn’t get discouraged and then rattled off three birdies in a row to close out the front nine which is always nice.”

Campbell returned to the Rome area this spring from Florida to work at Teugega. Campbel is no stranger to the Donald Ross course near Delta Lake.

“I grew up and was member at Teugega since I was about 6-years-old so it holds a special place in my heart,” Campbell said.

It was Campbell’s third victory of the season. He has two wins in CNY PGA Assistants events this season. He also finished tied for fourth at the Central New York Open on July 1.

Campbell attributed his success to letting the game come to him.

“I’m not so focused on the golf swing and I’m getting back to just going out and playing and not forcing anything,” he said. “I’m just letting whatever happens happen.”

In the team competition, the PGA REACH CNY team, featuring Joey Tesori, PGA and amateurs Matt Martins, Nick Bove and Luke Barney, came in first (15-under 129).

Campbell’s Teugega foursome came in second at 13-under 131 with amateurs Ryan Borruso, Rob Clark and Doug Decarlo.
