Johnny Gruninger was the overall boys champion at the 2020 Junior Open.

This past weekend marked the start of the Central New York PGA Junior Tour season with the Central NY PGA Junior Open. The event was held at Mark Twain Golf Course and Soaring Eagles Golf Club on June 13th and 14th.

With over 90 players in the field, this year’s event marked the first Junior Open with players from outside Central NY. Players from Western NY, North Eastern NY, and the Tri-State PGA section were welcomed this year and will be able to play in the Junior Open for years to come.

Johnny Gruninger, of Syracuse, shot a 2-under-par 69 in the final round to win the Central New York PGA Junior Open Sunday by one stroke over Seth Conway at Soaring Eagles in Horseheads.

Gruninger finished the 36-hole event at 3-under (71-69) 140 and was the overall boys winner. Conway finished at 2-under 141 after rounds of 70 and 71. Gruninger entered the final round at Soaring Eagles one stroke behind Conway, who was the first-round leader at Mark Twain in Elmira.

Besides Gruninger, Julia Zigrossi, of Spencerport, was the Girls Overall winner at 6-over (75-74) 149 total. Julia Zigrossi and Central NY’s very own Nataly Avotins were both tied (+3) 75 going into the final round.

The boys 12-13 division winner was Porter Matt at 12-over (80-83) 163 total.

Matthew Carpentier, of Pittsford, recorded a tournament highlight by scoring his first career hole-in-one June 13 at Mark Twain Golf Course. Carpentier aced the 184-yard 15th hole.
