The largest field in tournament history competed for top honors in two age divisions at the Central New York Women’s Association Championship on Sept 22. The fourth annual event for women of all skill levels was held at Oneida Community Golf Club.

 

On a warm and sunny first day of Fall, 60 golfers participated in an18-hole, two-person team gross score Solheim Cup format (six holes Scramble, six holes Alternate Shot and six holes Best Ball). The age divisions were Junior (age 64 and under) and Senior (age 65 and over).

 

Pennie Carlo won her second straight tournament title, this year in the Senior Division, with partner Barb Harrison, of Oswego. The pair finished with a 1-over 73. Carlo, of Rome, won with Junior Division with Monica Hamilton last year.

 

In the Junior Division, Bellevue Country Club members Teresa Cleland, of Syracuse, teamed up with Katie Piston, of Syracuse, to finish first at 3-over 75. For Cleland also took first in the Junior Division in 2022.

 

Championship trophies were provided by Sterling Cut Glass.

 

The tournament also held closest to the pin and closest to the creek contests. The closest to the creek winners were Mary Diefendorf (Senior) and Amy Brown (Junior). The closest to the pin in the Junior Division were Jeanette Cantu and Stacey Hornbeck at 13 feet. In the Senior Division, it was Julie Burbank and Mimi Hall at 10 inches.

The post-tournament dinner for participants featured a tapas menu centered around food specialties from different areas in England.

 

Central New York PGA Women’s Association, now under the umbrella of the PGA REACH CNY Foundation, was established to promote the game of golf for women golfers of all skill levels by offering different playing opportunities and golf-related experiences.
