Matthew Jaynes fired a four-under-par 68 to win the Turning Stone Resort Casino Pro-Am Series No. 1 on May 13 at the Shenendoah Course.
Jaynes (Corning CC) finished two strokes ahead of Eric Manning (Elm Tree GC), who won the event last year at Kaluhyat.
“It’s always special to pull out a win amongst your peers, especially with the talent in our Section,” Jaynes said. “It’s also great to kick off the season with strong play, and we’ll see if I’m up to the challenge to keep it rolling.”
Jaynes birdied his last three holes in breezy conditions at Shenendoah to secure the win. He finished with six birdies against two bogeys on the day.
“I made a good putt on 16 from 20 feet after a misplayed pitch shot,” Jaynes said. “I bunted a 7-iron into 17 green under the wind and left myself a kick in. On 18, I played conservative and hit a good wedge into a few feet to convert the third.”
Jaynes enjoyed the challenge of playing Shenendoah with Corning CC members Jeff Dill, Jack Wright and Bob Decker who are also close friends. The tournament drew 38 teams.
“The course played tough, the rough was super penal and some tee placements were different so that you had to think more about carries or through yardages,” Jaynes said. “I always appreciate the opportunity to play at Turning Stone and Shenendoah and am thankful for their hospitality.”
Jaynes preparation for Shenendoah was limited due his work schedule and poor weather heading into the tournament. But his early season preparations and practice from playing in the 2024 PGA Professional Championship in Frisco factored in his solid round.
“I’m fortunate to have had the opportunity to go and compete, and to have some focused practice and those 4-5 rounds early this season,” said Jaynes, who earned $750 for first.
Manning finished second with a 2-under 70. Robert Larsen (Onondaga G&CC) and Jay Turcsik were tied for third at 72.
Joe Tesori (Pompey Club) and Tim Hume (McConnellsville) tied for the Senior Division at 2-over 74.
Manning’s foursome won the team portion of the tournament with amateurs Yale Hughes, Matt Petrella and Chris Griffin.
