Jonny Petrin shot rounds of 75 and 73 to capture his second straight National Car Rental/Central New York PGA Assistants Championship on Aug. 26 at Turning Stone Resort Casino. Competitors played 36 holes of individual stroke play competition on the Kayluhat and Shenendoah courses.
Petrin (Lakeshore 1860) had three birdies against three bogeys in the final round to finish at 4-over-par 148. Petrin finished five strokes ahead of Dylan Plis (CNY Section) and Rob Phelps (Vesper Hills), who tied for second. Both Plis and Phelps were 9-over 153.
Petrin’s cashed $1,100 for the win but he is not eligible to play in the National Championship. Phelps received the Section’s berth at the 46th annual National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship in November at PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Robert Larsen (Onondaga GCC) led all players with a 1-over 73 after the first round. Petrin was among four players tied for second at 75 after the first round.
Petrin made up the deficit and took the lead by carding three birdies on his first four holes in the second round.
Petrin won the 2021 Assistants Championship in a playoff at Cazenovia Country Club, his first professional victory.
