PGA of America Golf Professional Matt Alm admits golf is a challenging game. But it also has given him an avenue for endless learning especially when teaching the next generation.
“Golf has taught me many things,” Alm said. “This game is very complicated and it’s quite a journey to try and figure out what swing fits you or your students. I have found that the students with the most discipline and desire to learn see the quickest improvement.”
For Alm, helping his students improve on the golf course is one gratifying aspect as the Head Professional at Owasco Country Club. He’s looking forward to the start of the PGA Jr. League
“Watching the players develop their golf games and grow to love the game as much as I do is very rewarding,” said the 39-year-old Alm, who is entering his third year at Owasco.
Here’s what Alm, of Freeville, had to say about his career.
On his start in in golf: I got into golf at a very young age. My father bought me my first golf club set at age 7. One of my first jobs was working at Willowbrook Golf Club in Cortland doing some of the outside service stuff, cleaning carts, taking care of the trash.
On what he enjoys most about his job: One of the best parts about the job is growing the game and the relationship you build with your members. I feel very lucky to be at Owasco Country Club that has such a great community around it.
On what inspired you to get into golf: Playing golf with my father really got me to love the game. Also watching Tiger Woods do what he did on the PGA Tour at the beginning of his career was very inspiring.
Golfers he most admires: I would say there’s two Tiger Woods and Adam Scott. Tiger was a very exciting player to watch with what he could do with a golf ball and with Adam Scott, his fundamentals with his golf swing I always admired everything about it because it seemed to be perfect.
Favorite non-golf activity: My favorite thing to do is spend time with my family. My wife and I have three young kids (Carter, Sawyer, and Allie) that take a lot of my time in the winter as it’s our off season. Anytime the five of us can get out of the house and do something together it’s a fantastic time. The months when I’m working, I don’t always get to see them a lot so we take full advantage when I’m off in the winter.
