PGA of America Members from the Central New York Section squared off against members of the Syracuse District Golf Association in two legendary season-ending events: the Sovik Cup and the Mitchell Cup. The SDGA swept the events.

 

The 38th Sovik Cup took place Oct. 3 at Tuscarora Golf Club with the SDGA earning a 17-13 win. The annual match play event is for senior players. Teams were comprised of players who finished their 2024 season ranked in their respective Player of the Year standings.

 

Senior PGA Members (55 and over) on the CNY PGA Sovik Cup team were: Eric Manning (Elm Tree GC), Sean Dadey (Drumlins CC), Nick Serafino (Timber Banks GC), Tim Hume (McConnellsville GC), Jeff Reader (Cazenovia GC), Steve Campanaro (Teugega CC), Rob Phelps (Vesper Hills), Andy Myers (Sunset Ridge GC), Joe Tesori (Pompey Club), Stan Lisk (Life Member), Mel Baum (Wa-Noa GC) and Robert Marton (Cavalry Club).

 

 

Reader teamed up with Campanaro to win their match, 5-0, against SDGA’s John Harrington and Walt McArdell. Serafino and Hume chalked up a 4.5-0.5 win over Chris Smithers and Jack Weinerth.

 

Also playing on SDGA Sovik team were: Luke Hobika, Joe Babcock, Tim Scheemaker, Bruce Levinson, Randy Young, Nick DellaPenna, Richard Volcko, and Greg Bilyeu.

 

The CNY PGA leads the all-time series 21-15-1, but the SDGA has won the Cup three out of the last four years.

 

The Sovik Cup is an annual tournament in honor of Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Famer Larry Sovik, who won six Syracuse District Amateur Championships in his career.

 

At the 51st annual Mitchell Cup, the SDGA posted a 27-21 victory over the CNY PGA on Oct. 6.

 

The Mitchell Cup is a team tournament featuring the CNY PGA and SDGA’s top players. It is held annually at Onondaga Golf and Country Club. The event is named in honor of CNY PGA hall of famer William “Bill” Mitchell who served as Onondaga’s Head Golf Professional from 1927-1973.

 

Although the CNY PGA won the Modified Alternate Shot morning round, 7-5, the SDGA came back to secure the Cup by winning the Four-Ball matches, 22-14.

 

Competing for the CNY PGA were: Manning, Phelps, Serafino, Hume, Reader, Dennis Colligan (Cazenovia GC), Jay Turcsik (Mark Twain GC), Trey Walewski (Meadowbrook GC), Michael Morschauser (Cavalry Club), Will Weimer (Stone Creek GC), Matt Jaynes (Corning CC), and Robert Larsen (Onondaga G&CC).

 

Members of the SDGA squad were: Jackson Saroney, Johnny Gruninger, Brett Cunningham, Jim Hirsh, Adam Butch, Ben Gaulin, Spencer Baum, Brad Monroe, Nick Bove, Connor Wisniewski, Joel Jakubowicz and Mike Deblois.

 

Colligan and Turcsik earned a team-best six points for the CNY PGA as they won their Four-Ball and Modified Alternate Shot matches.

 

The CNY PGA leads the all-time series 31-18-1.
